City Pages and the collective of musicians at Korda Records are excited to present Korda 4 Showcase, a fantastic night of local music including rapid fire half hour sets by The Ocean Blue, The Hang Ups, Ice Palace, The Starfolk, Jim Ruiz Set, & Runes av Vaskeri. It will be a double release party for Korda 4 Komp featuring new music from our entire roster, and for the highly anticipated new album by Ice Palace, their first in 1o years!
It’s a rare chance to see some local favorites, including The Hang Ups who were chosen artists of the month by The Current and have recently re-grouped to work on a new album; “Legendary” Jim Ruiz who made his name going against the grain of grunge in the 1990’s with heartfelt bossa beat pop (Star/Trib feature), and The Ocean Blue whose inviting atmospheric janglepop landed them deals with Sire and Warner Bros in the late 80’s/early 90’s and whose lead singer helped us start the record label cooperative Korda Records (props from City Pages). Runes av Vaskeri will rock your world with modern day beat pop, The Starfolk will dazzle with cello fueled psych pop and Transmission’s DJ Jake Rudh helps us kick off the night with a Korda-inspired set.
Korda Records is a cooperative label run by the musicians, and is all about helping each other and being inspired by each other to make great work.

We have a film installation at Resonance Box sound art gallery for the month of March! The Stafolk plays the closing night March 31st 7pm!
The event includes a screening of a short film by Jacqueline Ultan (of Jelloslave) Conversations With Nature, which captures her live cello improvisations in a stunning and remote vista of the South Dakota Badlands, followed by Q&A with Jacqueline and the filmmakers (Allison LaBonne and Brian Tighe) along with a live performance by their mutual ensemble The Starfolk (melodic chamber pop featuring vocals, guitar, bass, and cello).
The film has a 15 minute run time distilling the best moments sonically and visually from two days of camping and composing live in the Badlands. This was an amazing experience for the trio necessitating an evolution of their musical collaboration to include filmmaking in support of Jacqueline’s vision of letting her music magnify and be directly fed by the vivid and sensual expressiveness of the natural world.

Visiting artists The Starfolk, a chamber pop trio from Minneapolis perform for the first time in the Ely area on June 16 as part of their week long residency at Tofte Lake Center. “Chamber pop” refers to the distinctive use of cello in The Starfolk’s sound, and their acclaimed cellist Jacqueline Ultan is also the group’s connection to Ely.
“I first visited Ely on a residency developing music for The Sandbox Theater, and now I come back whenever I can. I fell in love with Tofte Lake Center’s beautiful juxtaposition of solitude and community, so nurturing to creative work.”
Ultan’s dual cello lead group Jelloslave drew the largest audiences The Aerie Performance Venue had ever seen, and she’s excited to return with The Starfolk next month.
“I love bringing a too-often backgrounded instrument to the forefront in diverse musical styles. The chemistry we create in The Starfolk is powerful. These are melodic, adventurous pop songs with thoughtful lyrics that I think local audiences will really connect with.”
Ultan also looks forward to stocking up on her favorite Ely concoction: Crapola Granola. “Thankfully now I can find Crapola at Cub Foods in Minneapolis,” she says, “but I discovered it here first.”
The Starfolk is: Brian Tighe (Guitar, vocals) Jacqueline Ultan (cello), Allison LaBonne (Bass Guitar, vocals).
The Starfolk perform at 7pm Friday June 16th 2017
